The City of Spruce Grove has broken ground on the construction of the new Public Works facility located on Century Close. The $18.6 million project will meet energy and environmental design standards and is expected to be completed in September 2014. The 179,560 square-foot building sits on 8.65 acres and is significantly larger than the current facility Public Works utilizes on Schram Street. Presently, the City employs approximately 50 staff who work in the current building. Additionally, roughly 50 seasonal staff are hired on seasonal basis. More than $13 million was provided to Spruce Grove through provincial MSI funding and $5 million was borrowed by the City.
Parkland County is now tied up in a legal battle with the Parkland Airport Development Corporation, who has continued construction of the aerodrome along Sand Hills Road in defiance of a recent stop order from the County. On Friday, Oct. 11, legal counsel for the County filed and served an originating application and supporting affidavit to the Parkland Airport Development Corporation. The Parkland Airport Development Corporation have also filed an injunction against the County stop order. One week later, on Oct. 18, a Court of Queen’s Bench decision ruled that Parkland County should issue a permit for the airport developers to haul gravel and asphalt until Oct. 25.
Transport Canada is now requiring the Parkland Airport Development Corporation to undergo community consultation, as well as develop an airport wildlife management plan and an airport emergency plan. A letter sent from Transport Canada to the airport developers on Oct. 24 directed them to further submit a comprehensive project description to the Canadian Environmental Agency, which would then determine whether an environmental assessment and further public consultation would be required.
Local RCMP officers hit the road checking vehicles for locked doors and visible valuables in Spruce Grove neighbourhoods on Oct. 18. It was the first of several walks officers will conduct throughout Spruce Grove and Stony Plain to raise awareness surrounding thefts from vehicles. This on-the-ground campaign is in response to a high number of thefts involving vehicles in recent months. During their routes RCMP officers will work through a checklist to assess parked vehicles for locked doors, open windows and visible valuables. The list also identifies whether a vehicle is parked in a safe place or not.
