Dry weather and wildfires in areas of the Capital Region have prompted Parkland County Fire Chief Jim Phelan to issue a Fire Advisory for Parkland County. Many municipalities throughout the province have issued fire bans, and Parkland County has been weighing the pros and cons of following suit given some of the fires occurring in the region.
The high winds and warm temperatures which caused Edmonton to impose a fire ban on Tuesday afternoon are keeping firefighters busy outside of the city. A grass fire is currently burning south of Spruce Grove in the area of Golden Spike Road, say RCMP. Authorities were alerted of the Parkland County fire around 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, said Cpl. Collette Zazulak of the RCMP. At this time, Zazulak says they don’t know the exact size of the grass fire. However, reports are conflicted whether any nearby residents have been told to leave their homes.
Work is scheduled to start next week on a significant road improvement project on Century Road in Spruce Grove. The project includes three main phases that will focus on upgrading the Highway 16 and Century Road overpass, the Century Road and Grove Drive intersection, and the surface of Century Road from Grove Drive to Highway 16A. These upgrades will help improve traffic flow for drivers entering and leaving Spruce Grove and enhance traffic safety at the overpass and along Century Road.
Chris Scheetz, a morning radio host on CISN Country 103.9, recently made the long trek from Spruce Grove to Evansburg in support of CISN’s Drive for Life Contract. It took Scheetz about five days to complete the 250 kilometre journey, which is roughly the distance from the outskirts of Edmonton to the outskirts of Calgary. Scheetz began on the morning of Monday, May 13 and was scheduled to finish in the afternoon on Friday, May 17. During the five day span he updated his Twitter regularly with tweets and photos of his ventures, including tracking the amount of kilometres he ran from time to time.
